Sultan
of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday urged Nigerian Muslims
to look out for the new moon of Ramadan on July 8 and communicate
findings to him.
The
sultan’s call was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman,
Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sokoto Sultanate Council
Prof. Sambo Wali.

“This is to inform you that Monday, July 8 is the 29th day of Sha’aban 1434 AH and shall be the day to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan,” the statement said.
He
added that upon sighting of the new moon, Muslims are to report such to
the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the
sultan.
The
statement listed the following telephone numbers as channels which the
public could use to report the sighting of the new moon: 0803-715-7100;
0803-041-3534; 0803-507-3872; 0803-596-5322 and 0803-314-3866.
However,
if the new moon is not sighted on Monday, July 8, Muslims will
automatically begin the Ramadan fast on Wednesday, July 10.
